A baby bassinet or cradle can be convenient, comfortable and a handy sleeping place for a baby during the first months of being at home. It is also ok to use a crib, but due to the large size your baby may not feel as safe and secure as in a smaller space.

Advantages

They are easily moved, being highly portable, which lets you keep a close eye on your sleeping baby when it needs to be watched, but lets you move it back into the baby’s room later. You can easily move the bassinet into your room, to be more easily accessed for a late night feeding.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately, due to the smaller size, the baby will quickly outgrow the bassinet or cradle within four or five months. To get the best value, try a combo play yard and bassinet, so once your baby outgrows the bassinet you will still have the play yard.

Types Of Bassinets And Cradles

Bassinets

A bassinet is essentially a smaller, more compact baby bed with a frame constructed of wood, metal, plastic or wicker. It has fabric coverings, sometimes only on the inside. Since they are made to be portable, there are often wheels attached to the bottom. Many come with a hood in order to block light, letting the baby sleep. Some will have storage shelves underneath. Obviously, if the bassinet is being moved around from room to room often, the number of items on the shelf should be limited, as they can fall off. Many bassinets come with optional features, such as toys, vibrations to gently lull your baby to sleep or music.

Folding Bassinet

Folding Bassinets are perfect for parents that are pushed for space. These are convenient but are also stylish and functional. They fold flat for easy storage and travel. These are suitable for babies up to five months of age, or until the baby learns to roll over.

Co-Sleepers

Co-sleepers allow you to safely sleep close to your baby, without the various dangers that come with having it in the bed. There are two main types of co-sleepers -

The most common types are designed to attach to an adult bed and has a leg stand to hold it.

Another type, has no legs and is put into the adult bed. It is a small bed, similar to a basket, with mesh sides and a metal frame. Cradles

Cradles are mainly made of timber. They can come with a rocking or sliding action, which will help babies to relax and fall asleep. They can be used until four to six months.

They don’t take up much space, similar to a bassinet. You must be very careful with some rocking cradles, as babies can sometimes roll into a side and suffocate. Babies do enjoy being rocked to sleep, but avoid a cradle that rocks excessively. Try to get one with a smoother and softer swinging motion and a locking system to prevent unwanted rocking, as it is unsafe to leave a baby alone in a cradle that can rock.

Bassinets That Come With Strollers

Some expensive strollers can include a bassinet. This combination is called a carrycot, and attaches to the carriage. They’re particularly useful for newborns, but are more of a luxury item than an essential. They should not be used as a full time sleep solution, as you cannot be sure that the baby will be safe for long periods while unattended.

Moses Baskets

Moses baskets are primarily made from palm, but can also be made from maize or wicker. Like many bassinets, a Moses basket has carrying handles, a padded bottom fabric layer and sides. The most useful feature is the ability to carry your baby about the house. Moses baskets are generally for baby until three to four months old. A safe Moses basket will have a wide and sturdy base, which is based on a stable surface. It shouldn’t have any ties, bows or ribbons as these can cause strangulation. The sides should be a minimum of twelve inches high off the base. Make sure to use a firm mattress that fits the basket tightly, but is not thicker than three inches. Make sure to test the handles for sturdiness. Try to get a one piece handle. Despite there being handles, it is not recommended to actually carry the basket while the baby is in it.

What To Look For When Purchasing

Make sure, when buying a bassinet or cradle, that the model is certified by the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association). Look for the seal on the product.

Make sure there is a sturdy bottom, which is strong enough to hold the weight of the baby. It should also have a wide, sturdy and stable base to prevent it from falling over. Makes sure to pick high-quality materials, construction and safety. Regularly check any screws to make sure they are tightened properly.

If it has a stand, make sure the legs are lockable so that the bassinet cannot collapse without warning. If it also has wheels they should also lock, to stop any sudden roll-aways.

As a safety concern, slats of the basket should be less than 2 3/8 inches apart, which will prevent any heads or fingers slipping through or getting caught.

Check that the mattress fits snugly by seeing how many fingers you can fit between the mattress and the side of the bassinet. If it’s more than two, it’s not safe.

Other Features

Some models have pockets or other storage options underneath, these can be used for diapers, baby wipes or even spare clothes. Many have a dual purpose, functioning both as a bassinet and a change table, or bedside co-sleeper, which can be attached to an adult bed, allowing you to co-sleep with your baby safely. Many have soothing features, which help you lull your baby to sleep, such as vibration, calming music or detachable mobiles. They can also include a dim night-light, which allows you to check on your baby, without disturbing them.

What To Avoid

Ensure that the product is designed to be specifically a bassinet. A makeshift bassinet e.g. a wicker basket on a stand of some sort is definitely not safe. Be cautious of any sharp or protruding edges on the inside that may injure a baby.

Some bassinets have bedding included. If there is a quilt or similar bedding included, you should realize that these are mainly for decoration only. Do not keep this in the bassinet, as the bedding can pose a suffocation hazard. Never use any loose sheets, blankets or other bedding. Consider a sleep sack or wearable blanket which will keep them warm and safe.

A bassinet or cradle will be an important part of a young baby’s life, until they are old enough to have their own crib. While they are not essential for a baby, they do provide a level of comfort and safety that a crib cannot provide to a young baby. They can also help make the bond between parents and baby stronger, through co-sleeping or just by having the bassinet or cradle in the same room as you. Check by shaking the crib lightly, if you can hear something rattling, it’s probably not as sturdy as it should be.

Mid-Priced Cribs

There are a large range of choices within this price range. These are often sturdier, more durable and more decorative than the cheaper economy models. They are also normally finished in a seen-through finish, which shows off the grain and natural beauty of the wood. These finishes can be either clear, or tinted, in a variety of wood colors. The end boards are solid with a properly sanded, smooth finish. Often they have slats on all the sides, and these slats are thicker than those on an economy model. The support of the mattress is often sturdier due to heavier springs.

The wheels or casters, which are sometimes optional, can lock which provides stability and stops the crib from moving accidentally. There may also be stabilizer bars (metal rods that are located between the end rods), which provide extra rigidity. The best cribs will have no exposed nails and no glue residue, near the slats. They will also have a well-applied smooth finish. Some also come with storage drawers, for holding diapers and other essential baby products.

High-End Cribs

Many of the high-end cribs are imported from the UK or Europe, but may have actually been made in China. They often have hand-rubbed (French polish), glazed or similar finishes. They will often have a higher level of decoration, such as carved or curved end boards, or hand-painted details. Some cribs are actually also not made of wood, but rather iron. Some manufacturers will make a custom crib for you, as this will be able to match your baby’s room better. Mattresses on these cribs are very sturdy, and use heavy springs and strong metal frames.

Convertible Crib

Convertible cribs can be converted into a larger bed for toddlers, when your child outgrows the crib stage, a daybed, or a full-sized child bed. Note that for a child bed you will need to purchase bed rails.

Portable Cribs

Portable cribs are extremely handy for parents that are always taking their babies on trips. They are almost the same as a normal crib, but are lighter and smaller, thus been designed for travel.

You must remember, these aren’t as long as regular, full-sized cribs, which means they take up less space, making them useful in a small apartment, or as a crib to take over to the grandparents.

You will need to buy a smaller mattress and sheets that are specifically made for the smaller crib. You should make sure to use sheets that are included with the crib, or made by the same manufacturer as the crib, or a sheet that has been deemed acceptable for use with their crib, by the manufacturer.

What To Look For When Selecting A Crib

When buying a crib look for a seal or certification from the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association). This seal assures you that the product was tested for both baby safety and quality. Make sure to check for any product recalls on the crib you have or are planning to buy.

Slats

Slats should be 2 3/8 inches apart at the most. If the slats are too far apart, a baby’s head or arms can slip through and get caught.

Safe Corner Posts

Any corner posts on the crib should be no taller than 1/16 of an inch, unless they’re tall enough to be able to support a canopy. Any higher, and the corner posts will pose a risk of getting clothing caught, which can result in injury.

Adjustable Mattress Height

Many cribs have adjustable crib mattress heights by changing the mattress support in the crib. The mattress should be lowered when the child gains the ability to sit up. As they become more active and adventurous, such as standing up, the mattress should be lowered further, to stop them from climbing or falling out.

Stability

Test the crib by giving it a shake. It should not wobble or rattle. If it does, try taking it apart and putting it back together. If it continues to wobble, you may want to return it and search for a sturdier, steadier crib.

Frame Size

The inside of the crib should snugly fit a standard mattress for a crib (about 51 ¾ inches long and 27 ¾ inches wide). Try putting your fingers down the side of the mattress, between the crib mattress and the sides of the crib. If more than two fingers can fit, the mattress is too small. Although it may not seem like much, babies can get stuck in that small area. Again, check that when the mattress is in place, the sides of the crib are high enough to keep the baby safe.

Versatility

Many cribs are also able to be converted into a toddler bed or the basic frame of a full-size bed. When considering purchasing a convertible crib, make sure to consider the ease of which the crib will convert,  as well as how well it will fit into the overall design of your growing toddlers room.

What To Avoid When Selecting A Crib

Cribs With Drop Sides

Don’t use them. Even though they were once very common, for decades, they can still pose a very serious hazard to young children. If one of the drop sides comes loosen or falls, the baby can become trapped.

Old Cribs

Be cautious of cribs made before federal guidelines existed (pre-1973). These are more likely to have safety issues than modern cribs. They may have also become weakened or damaged overtime, resulting in a dangerous hazard for your baby. They may have lead based paint, dangerous features, splinters or slats that are not close together enough. Remember, even recent models can be unsafe, so make a checklist of safety features that you should be looking for in each model you’re considering. Look for slat spacing, stability, sharp edges, exposed metal, peeling paint and other dangerous features.

Decorative Touches

Avoid decorations, such as integrated toys, or other things that can fall off and become a choking hazard for the baby. Cribs with designs that have been cut-out of the panels, whilst they do look pretty, they pose potential traps for fingers or necks. It’s best to avoid fancy crib designs and go for a plain design, as they are easier to maintain and safer for your baby.

Setting Up The Crib

Many parents have the crib set up and ready a few months before their expected delivery date. It is a good idea to make sure this task is taken care of, as it can be a bit of a panic, trying to get a crib set up before baby and mother arrive home from the hospital.

Also When setting up the crib, make sure to choose the right spot. A correct spot should be away from windows, blinds, curtains and other draperies. The hanging cords can strangle a baby, and an older baby could climb through an open window. In order to protect the baby from loose cords, use a clamp to hold the cord, attach the cord to itself or just cut it, so there isn’t a loop in the cord.

When buying a crib, make sure you are one hundred percent sure that it is completely safe for your child. Watch out for poorly constructed cribs, that may have patchy paint, exposed metal or loose joints. Since your baby is going to be making good use of the crib, don’t be afraid to spend a little more for the higher quality models. Remember to always test and check any model before you purchase it, carry a checklist of safety checks (paint, joints, construction) so that you will be able to check the crib thoroughly.
